The United Nations estimates that by 2050, 66% of the world’s population will live in cities. This creates an unprecedented pressure on local governments (LGs) to optimise the standards of living. Global Warming Study of IPCC (2018) and statistics of International Energy Agency (2019) show, that current pace of reducing CO2 to achieve 2030 goals and secure safe and healthy living environment is not sufficient. Green AURA creates more efficient administrative co-operation between cities, citizens and institutions to speed up the process by the adoption of the living labs (LL) concept. LL is a methodology or an environment, dealing with user-centered, open innovation ecosystems in a territorial context. It integrates innovation processes within a citizen-public-private partnership by involving quadruple helix stakeholders (public administration, companies, researchers, users) – the direct target groups of the project. LL involves four activities: co-creation by users and producers, exploration of emerging usages and behaviours, experimentation of live scenarios within communities, evaluation of concepts and products according to socioergonomic, economic criteria. The project establishes a LL at Pécs at the premises of the University and improves the new living lab of Koprivnica. Partners develop different parts of the labs to share capacities: Pécs puts focus on involving cizitens by awareness raising on decarbonisation and explaining technologies the city provides for them. By recognising their CO2 footprints and the affects how using public transport, e-bikes, echargers can contribute to climate protection, citizens will be better engaged for a behavioural change. Also, they will express their needs towards the city via the webpage of Green AURA and at the LL events, where installation stands with markers and augmented reality content behind will present the related investments of the city and the university. The AR content will be developed by IT companies based on the requirements of the municipalities, educational institutions, civil organisations and clusters. User comments will support the city and the university to set priorities for their green investments and better fulfil the requirements of a Green University and Green Capital.
Croatia’s new LL will be improved by adding AR content as an innovative knowledge transfer tool. Koprivnica concentrates on better connecting the city with suppliers and researchers by providing them basic infrastructure for testing and deployment their products and services. At current stage, LL in Koprivnica provides public lighting poles for installation of different LED lighting products, where citizens, suppliers and other cities can examine the lighting characteristics, make remarks and – in case of other cities – prepare decisions on investments.
The AR content of infographics and animations will expain the operation of the technologies and their CO2 reduction effects in a well-understandable way. In Hungary the audience will use their mobile phones and some tablets to access the content after downloading the app, while in Croatia VR headsets will be procured. Using different technologies will help their comparison, which will be channelled into the recommendations of the joint strategy. Work division is based on competences: technology development is ensured by UP and REAN, cooperation with citizens is organised by the cities. All partners take part actively in the conceptualisation process.
